The SEB Podcast That Wouldn’t Die

Well, it didn’t go off without a hitch, but considering that this is my first successful use of Open Broadcast Software to do something like this, it went pretty well. Getting this to work involved installing an NDI plugin to import a Skype conference call into OBS. At first, Dave sounds a little robotic because OBS was capturing his audio twice. Once from Skype itself and a second time via the desktop audio capture.

Having corrected that, the rest of the podcast went fairly smoothly other than a couple of glitches on Daves end that paused his video for a moment and then left the audio out of sync until it paused a second time and corrected it.

Lastly, my mother started watching TV without her hearing aids in mid-way through the stream and you can clearly here it in the background. I will make a mental note to be sure she has her hearing aids in before starting a podcast in the future.

The only other problem was arguably a lack of direction in what we were talking about. It’s been three years and we spent a good chunk just getting caught up. I’m also ADHD so my train of thought meanders as I’m talking.

We are planning on trying to do this again next month which should help improve all of these things. Hopefully you guys at least find it mildly amusing. I always enjoy making these with Dave.

UPDATED: How about a little SEB Podcast to brighten your day?

UPDATE: A little further below I announced the date of the return of the SEB Podcast as February 20th at 3PM. As it turns out, Dave is apparently very highly in demand at his current job and as such a big super-secret project he’s involved with has already resulted in us having to postpone the return of the podcast just hours after we settled on a date and time. The new date will be March 6th at 3PM. We now return you to our original entry.

If you’re a long-time visitor to SEB then you know that at one point in time, I attempted to start a podcast with Dave Hill of ***Dave Does the Blog. In the past 11 years since we started it in February of 2010, we have managed only ten total podcasts. If you look in the podcast section of the blog, you’ll see that we managed to do the first four in the same year with only a couple of months between them. Then the fifth was nearly a year later with the next two also coming in within a couple months of each other. The eighth one, again, came nearly a year after the seventh. The ninth, however, well it was over three years later in 2015. Jinkies!

I hear you saying, “Wait a minute! You said you did ten podcasts, but there’s only 9 listed in the podcast menu!”

Yes, the tenth was done as a live-stream in Google Hangouts which I apparently never got around to adding to the podcast menu. Probably because I was going to strip the audio from it and save it as a MP3 file. You can find it here on my YouTube channel. It was streamed on May 6th, 2018 making it almost three years ago that we last sat around shooting the shit. Naturally, this means it’s time for Dave and I to make another one.

I’m still really annoyed they killed off Google Hangouts.

So, that’s what we’re going to do. On February 20th at 3PM EST I will haul the desiccated remains of the Stupid Evil Podcast from the shallow grave it’s been lying in along the railway tracks and prop it up for another go. You can either watch it live as we stream it as we will once again doing it as a video stream or catch it later once it’s been archived to my YouTube channel. Google Hangouts streaming, which we used last time, is no more having been replaced by Google Meet. Which I think is the same damned thing with a new name. That’s probably what we’ll be using, but I’ll need to double check and make sure it’ll do what we want. I’ll leave a comment with exactly what we’re using once I know for sure.

As always, we’re looking to you guys for topic ideas. Yeah, Dave and I have a lot to catch up on, but it never hurts to find out what you guys want us to talk about. It doesn’t even have to be anything we’d know anything about, though it might make for a better answer if we know at least a little about it. Got something? Leave a comment below or on social media and we’ll try to address it.

It’s back! Return of the Son of the SEB PODCAST!

Despite it being almost three years since the last one and no one suggesting anything for us to talk about, Dave Hill and I managed to blather on for an hour about whatever we wanted to including some spoilery talk on Avengers: Infinity War. You’ll find it embedded below and the spoilers start at 47:17 so skp the last 13 minutes if you don’t want to hear them:

A quick roundup of stuff.

wellshitSo I see the blog is getting dusty again. Here’s what I’ve been up to instead of writing stuff.

Mostly it’s been looking for a new place to live. Our lease on our apartment here in Ann Arbor is up at the end of May and, much like the last several years, the folks at Village Green are asking for a huge jump in rent for us to stay another year (from $1,010 to $1,145). We’re living hand to mouth as it is already and so we’re on the hunt for someplace new which, unfortunately, means leaving Ann Arbor. We thought we’d found a place in Whitmore Lake, but the guy they thought was leaving in May has opted to stay another year and so they don’t have any units that’ll be available before we have to move.

Now we’re looking at possible renting a manufactured house in Novi which would put me within 15 minutes of work, but they’re already finding it hard to just show us the unit we’d be renting and that makes me wonder if moving there would be a mistake. We saw a unit that someone else is renting last Thursday and they promised we could see the one we were being offered either Monday or Tuesday, but here is is Wednesday and I actually had to take the day off tomorrow to maybe see it because reasons. They have an move-in incentive of getting the first month for free, but that promotion ends tomorrow if we don’t sign up and I’m not signing up until I see exactly what it is I’m signing up for. So depending on how things go tomorrow my hunt may or may not be over.

The SEB Podcast revival is still going to happen, but I’m not sure exactly when. Dave has been busy with remodeling his kitchen out in Denver and the month of May will have Anne and I packing for the move to wherever at the end of the month. So maybe we’ll squeeze it in and maybe it’ll be June. Still, Dave and I totally plan on doing it and we may re-ask about topics depending on how long it takes us to get our shit together.

Beyond that, the weather has improved a bit as of late, but I’m still not back to walking as often as I should. I’ve made it out a couple of times with my buddy Greg, but it’s still not a routine. My weight is hovering right in the mid-280’s so at least I haven’t put back on all that I’ve lost. I thought my Fitbit had crapped out on me as it stopped syncing for several days and I got on Twitter to moan about it and the FitBit folks responded with the secret of how to do a reset on the device. It’s back to working again and reminding me that I am one lazy motherfucker.

If you stopped by SEB today you may have found it unresponsive. Seems the Varnish cache that Dreamhost puts on the account needed to have its memory settings tweaked and was killing the site for several hours. Alas, the couple of posts I had intended to write (other than this one) have since withered and died. I’ll try to post something in the next day or so.

Need topics for the missing 8th SEB Podcast!

A pic of a microphone.

Blah blah blah...

Seeing as it’s been several weeks since the original call for topics for the 8th SEB Podcast it’d probably be a good idea to solicit new ones for it now that ***Dave and I have managed to settle on doing it this Sunday.

So I am once again turning to you, dear readers, for your suggestions/questions/topics that you’d like to hear two middle-aged white guys pontificate about at length. We’ll chatter on about nearly anything regardless of how qualified or (more likely) not we are to say anything cogent about it.

Opinions are like assholes and we have a lot of them… wait… that doesn’t sound quite right.

Anyway, you can either leave your suggestions in the comments on this thread or email them to me by clicking here. We’ll be recording the podcast this Sunday! For reals this time! Most likely.

A podcast delayed is a podcast denied.

Looks like you folks with have another week to think of topics for ***Dave and I to talk about in the next SEB Podcast. Seems ***Dave managed to break his computer and is currently Skypeless and thus unable to participate in our semi-regular forays into tangent travelling. He believes he should be back up and running in time to tackle it next weekend either through fixing what he has or tossing it out a window and buying a new one.

So put those thinking caps back on and see if you can’t come up with a couple more topics while ***Dave tries to salvage what he can from the burning wreckage that was his personal laptop. I’ll be over here either saving the free world from terrorists or ridding Azeroth of the orc menace.

It’s time for yet another Stupid Evil Podcast.

A pic of a microphone.

Blah blah blah...

It’s been a few of months since the last time ***Dave and I got together and rambled on semi-coherently and so that itch is looking to be scratched once again. And, as always, we’re asking you to provide us with any topics you’d like to hear us pontificate on.

Got a burning question on religion, politics, life, the universe, and/or everything you would love to hear us talk about? Leave a comment here or drop me an email with what it is. It can be almost anything as there are few things we’re not ready to chat about even if we’re completely unqualified to offer any opinions on it. That makes us just as fine of pundits as any of the talking heads on FOX News.

So loosen up those typing muscles and start tapping out your suggestions/questions and we’ll work on staying off tangents (yeah, right) and then ***Dave and I will sit down and record it all for posterity (you’re welcome future generations to come) this Sunday.

Need your topic ideas for the next SEB Podcast.

A pic of a microphone.

Blah blah blah...

The stars have once again come into alignment and that means we’re gearing up to do another Stupid Evil Bastard Podcast. This time ***Dave and I will be joined by George Wiman of Decrepit Old Fool. So you’ll be getting an extra third of pointless nattering with the next installment.

As per usual, we’re being lazy and asking you guys what you’d like to hear us talk about. Any questions you’ve been dieing to ask George? Or, for that matter, Dave or myself? You’ve got a whole week to get them in by leaving a comment on this entry or dropping me an email. Don’t be shy, we’re will to discuss just about anything. We might even have something insightful and ageless to say about it, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that last part. We’ll be recording it next Sunday assuming the rapture or something doesn’t happen before then.

And now, the 6th Stupid Evil Bastard Podcast.

A pic of a microphone.

Blah blah blah...

No musical intro this time, but we kept it under an hour and a half and we cover a whole bunch of stuff ranging from alcoholic drinks, Rick Perry, why progressives should vote for Obama, and the tension between brick and mortar stores and online retailers. Plus tangents! So many tangents as is our habit to do. We may not be the most entertaining or informative podcast, but we’re certainly one of the widest in variation of topics.

As always you can listen to it in the player below or download it by clicking here. We’re also open to hearing any comments/criticisms/witticisms in the comments. Let us know what you think.

Nothing like the smell of an autumnal SEB podcast.

A pic of a microphone.

Blah blah blah...

Fall arrives tomorrow and with it comes the need to do yet another Stupid Evil Bastard Podcast. ***Dave and I have managed to coordinate a time this Saturday to record another rambling session of tangent taking, but as always we need your help!

Topics! We need your topics! What do you want to hear two middle aged white nerdy guys talk about for an hour (or more)? Need relationship advice? Want our political insights?  We’re up for questions on just about anything no matter how ill qualified we happen to be to answer them. We can’t promise you the secrets to the ultimate questions of life, the Universe, and everything, but we’ll at least try to be funny when we make shit up.

So take a moment to drop a comment on this entry or send me an email with whatever you’re just dying to hear us address.
