The problem with video blogging…

… is figuring out what to video blog about.

So I now have a RCA Small Wonder digital camcorder and a new Hercules webcam for the express purpose of trying a little video blogging. You’ll note I’ve had both for some time now without producing anything and that’s because I’ve had an epiphany. Namely that I’m boring as hell when it comes to video blogging. I’m also not as well spoken when I actually speak as I am when I’m writing. I’ve also discovered that uploading to YouTube takes freakin’ forever. And I’m not sure I want to use YouTube over some of the other offerings out there. And I need to come up with something to put behind me at my computer desk so there isn’t just a bunch of random stuff behind me when I’m on video. And I still don’t have anything worth video blogging about. Hell, I’m having a hard time coming up with stuff to blog about the old fashioned way that don’t feel like me repeating the same thing for the hundredth thousandth time.

So I’m opening myself up to suggestions. The RCA Small Wonder is basically a webcam hooked up to flash memory so I can take it anywhere to do my recordings. The webcam has better sound quality, but limits me to my desk. Let me know what you think I should do with them and I’ll see if I can’t do some of them. Also let me know where you’d think a good place to host them would be. Preferably something that allows embedding a flash player into entries ala YouTube.

  1. I’d suggest going completely non-SEB. A religious… just kidding. Start at one end of your DVDs or bookshelf and start reviewing.

If video complicates things, generate interest by switching to an audio-only podcast to keep the momentum while you work out the video troubles.

Watch a bunch of others and see what you like and don’t like.

“Make” magazine does some neat ones “in the field”.

Tap into your experience: Installing a new videocard 101?

    Good luck.

  2. I’m still working on setting up a podcast as well. ***Dave and I have plans for one, it’s just a matter of finding time to do it together. grin

  3. LOL I got nuthin for ya.  I am in the same boat.  I want to Vblog some mainly for my family in another state…but I just can’t seem to think of anything that I want to talk about on camera.  It is easier to blog the regular way since you can save it and come back and post it later…

  4. I think it would be a cool idea.  I’d watch it.

As far as idea’s goes… you’re asking the wrong person.  I’ve thought about throwing myself to YouTube a couple of times, but I always chicken out, and anyway… if you think you’re boring, I must be suicide-inducing dull. smile

  5. Actually, it’s not quite true that I have no ideas, but good ones?? Dunno.  I did a video of my last road trip thinking it would be easy to make THAT interesting, but apparently I don’t have the video gene.  smile

Anyway, good luck.  Maybe something to do with your job?

  6. Want to go to the bar and bring the video camera along, and talk to drunks and not so drunks.  I will gladly sacrifice my liver in the pursuit of material that is half-way decent and entertaining.

  7. The most popular video blogs are porno, but I don’t think that would work too well, here. You could try something like Rush Limbaugh where you video what you do on the blog, but that also seems like not too interesting. And you don’t even like Rush. Reality TV is pretty popular, but maybe your reality would not be so. Hmmmmm. Script writer, anyone???

  8. Hmmm…I briefly considered starting an intermittent video blog series the other night when rereading an old post of my own and realizing how well it would work as a video rant. Maybe you could start there. Find a particularly spoken-word-friendly post and just bring it into a new medium.

  9. Script writer, anyone???

If by ‘script writer’ you mean ‘one who writes fart jokes’ then I can do that…  Wait.. I heard Rush Limbaugh and thought….. never mind.

  10. Michelle, I can’t remember the last time I went to a bar. That’s how boring I am in real life. grin

Bob, thanks for the suggestion of Ustream. I’ll look into it.

Leguru, I don’t think SEB porn would draw in new readers and it’d probably drive away the ones I have now. That and the wife definitely would veto that idea.

  11. Mounted mine on the handlebars of my motorcycle and rode down a ‘touristy’ valley in a civilised manner (don’t want to provide any evidence otherwise) .

The rest are just limericks , See

    Or not :-

Then I just gave it up for the same reasons you already stated šŸ™
