Military to Iraqi Vets: Shame you got wounded, where’s our money?

This is how the Bush Administration supports our troops:

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The U.S. Military is demanding that thousands of wounded service personnel give back signing bonuses because they are unable to serve out their commitments.

To get people to sign up, the military gives enlistment bonuses up to $30,000 in some cases.

Now men and women who have lost arms, legs, eyesight, hearing and can no longer serve are being ordered to pay some of that money back.

Fox was seriously injured when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle. He was knocked unconscious. His back was injured and lost all vision in his right eye.

A few months later Fox was sent home. His injuries prohibited him from fulfilling three months of his commitment. A few days ago, he received a letter from the military demanding nearly $3,000 of his signing bonus back.

“I tried to do my best and serve my country. I was unfortunately hurt in the process. Now they’re telling me they want their money back,” he explained.

Isn’t it bad enough that we sent this poor guy over there under false pretenses to begin with? That we’re not bothering to provide them with adequate medical care and facilities when they get back home? Now the government is going to demand signing bonuses back because they were injured enough that they couldn’t finish out their commitment.

Sign up for the American Military and experience the thrill of potentially being fucked over by your own government! Remember: We Support Out Troops!

…unless, you know, they get hurt or something.

  1. Signing bonuses and hazard pay are for exactly the reason that you might be serious wounded, irreparably damaged, or die.

Unfortunately, this is not a new concept for the US government.  The phrase “Indian Giving” did not develop from the lack of faith on the North American Natives’ side of the deal.

I’m sure we could all come up with many other historical (some recent and others none too recent) examples of broken US government promises and/or forceful recovery of “traded goods/services.”

I guess some people need to believe in a place like hell to comfort themselves…  A way to convince themselves that the world today and the people of planet Earth, “isn’t/aren’t so bad, because it is much worse in hell.”

  2. Funny I have not seen this mentioned on any of the right-wing blogs I read.

Are you sure- they are so concerned with exposing the truth about government…

  3. If I were at all cynical, I would be tempted to guess that the right is silent about this, because soldiers who can no longer fight for us have already served their purpose.  I’m glad I’m not that cynical, though.
