Phrack, an online phreaking and hacking magazine, is making one final release after 20 years of providing the masses with info on how to undermine “the Man.” The last issue will be number 63.
Phrack helped the earliest hackers create controversy by providing the know-how in the 80s and early 90s. Many of the staff were arrested and stalked by the FBI during the glory days of the publication. Now the magazine has lost much of its previous glory because the staff know the FBI actively monitors its content.
One of the most popular articles some of you may recognize from Phrack is “The Conscience of a Hacker” by The Mentor as it was often referred to as the Hacker Manifesto. The article was really popularized when it became a part of the movie “Hackers” starring Angelina Jolie back in 1995.
While I was never a real hacker I do own the “Hackers” movie and the book “Hackers” by Stephen Levy. After reading Levy’s book I found the magazine and downloaded all the issues along with the Legion of Doom technical journals and the Anarchist’s Cookbook. I’ve never actually read all the way through them, but the idea of having the knowledge at my finger tips has always appealed to me. I will certainly miss the great legacy of Phrack.
